April news
Welcome to the first newsletter on the new Talking Point website! We hope that you can find information you need and courses that inspire you!
The year has started quietly for some, busy for others. January, February and March have always been traditionally quiet, as productions get to the final stages to be greenlit in Spring. This year is no different - although whilst it is feeling quiet for many, it has actually been busier than usual with more productions shooting than we would expect.
Two truths are existing in parallel. There is more spend and investment in the UK than ever before, more productions, bigger crews working but equally, at the same time, a lot of people waiting to start jobs - and that is challenging. So, there really are two sides to the same coin. We, like other providers, are asked ‘why train more people when so many aren’t working?’. The answer is twofold - we need to grow the industry so it can meet the busy times with enough skilled crew for all productions, with no dilution of talent in departments or on screen. Also to strengthen our global competitive edge. We need good people coming through and to retain those already in the industry.
More productions are set to start this month and next so if you are not working yet, we hope you will be soon. Keep an eye on Filmbase for the job alerts.
And you can hopefully use the quiet time to keep busy - make new contacts, upskill! There will be plenty of courses coming up to do both of those things - and we will be running more aimed at those who are established in the industry, alongside our usual new entrant ones. We hope this will provide support to those who are keen to learn management and leadership skills and help grow the industry positively.
