It certainly feels like Autumn is around the corner with leaves turning colour and summer shoots wrapping up. There are more productions crewing up for 2026 and great to see so many job alerts going out.
THINGS COMING UP
GETTING STARTED IN SET DECORATING AND PROPS
We’ve had a great response to the ScreenSkills funded Getting Started in Set Decorating and Props. Nearly 400 people attended the webinar and heard Asst Buyer Alberto Achar and
Storesperson Emily Britton discuss their route into these departments and the impact training has had on their careers. Thank you to everyone who has submitted an application. We will be letting successful candidates know by Friday 26th September.

WORKING IN ART DEPT, SET DECORATING AND PROPS
For those who were not successful, we will be running our Working in Art Department, Set Decorating and Props zoom session on Thursday 23rd October 10:00 – 12:30. This informal session looks at the three departments, how they collaborate and skills required to work in each. We will also look at CVs and how to get onto productions. More information here.
ONE TO ONE SESSIONS are open for booking – these zoom sessions are great for anyone who is looking for some bespoke advice and guidance on next career steps. More information here
DIGITAL GUIDEBOOK - NEW LAUNCH
Our next digital guidebook will be coming out in the next couple of weeks – this one is all about what it takes to be a successful assistant on feature films and tv dramas. This includes some of the information we highlight and share with our trainees and mentees and we know it really makes a difference.

FILM CLUB
You may have seen on Instagram that we launched our new Talking Point Film Club last week, a chance to highlight films we love with some details about the production and its crew. Check it out and let us know if you love it too – and if you haven’t seen it, put it on the list!
THINGS WE HAVE BEEN ENJOYING
Very much enjoying the build up to BFI London Film Festival 8th – 19th October with some fantastic premiers of films on the watch list. Looking forward to seeing our members and mentors work on Wake Up Dead Man – A Knives Out Mystery, Hamnet, After The Hunt, Bugonia, Hamlet and Jay Kelly.
It's also good to see so many regional cinemas being used as LFF venues.
We’re coming into the months of cosy drinks and we’re lucky to have Brighton based independent company Bird and Blend tea in the office. Lots of spiced teas, herbals and chais for Autumn,– gingerbread chia is a favourite. Obviously Yorkshire is the only tea for everyday but these are a lovely seasonal alternative. There are also lots of Autumnal matchas – but let’s not go there! (those who know, know how we feel about those!)
Papier have a great range of colourful sticky notes – perfect for highlighting items on your to do lists in your notebooks! (Equally, if you are looking for the large (A5) post it notes, Sainsburys and Tesco have lots in for back to school)
INDUSTRY TOP TIP
We did a social post on cold calling and emailing this week and had so much interest and feedback. We always advise either phoning or emailing – and you will never know which one the recipient prefers, as that is personal choice. It varies widely – so you just need to be brave! We don’t advise WhatsApp or messaging as that often doesn’t feel professional enough. Lots of advice in the guidebook on the website if you need more support with reaching out.
