Production Buying in Film

NEW Course - NOVEMBER 2022


Learn the role of Production Buyer Understand leadership & management requirements Practise different budgetary approaches Identify your own skills & knowledge gaps This training is supported by ScreenSkills as part of the BFI Future Film Skills programme using funds from the National Lottery. It aims to provide a safe space for participants to fully understand the role of Production Buyer.


We will be looking at the following:

  • the role and its responsibilities

  • how to run a budget and communicate financial information

  • how to prioritise set demands and adapt the budgets accordingly

  • how to build relationships with prop houses and makers

  • how to manage and motivate a team of buyers effectively

  • how to ensure well-being through the production

  • how to recruit in a more inclusive manner

Who can apply: Applicants must have at least 3 credits on features/tv dramas in a buying capacity and be working at an experienced Petty Cash Buyer or Assistant Buyer level. If you do not meet this criteria but would still like to apply, please contact us before submitting an application. Course information and dates:* The programme will be delivered over 4 sessions on zoom*: 1st , 8th, 15th, 22nd November 8pm – 9pm. It will be moderated by Helen Johnson, with the following lead tutors;

  • Eva Onsrud Production Buyer (Napoleon, The Witcher, Rocketman)

  • Kathryn Pyle Set Decorator (Fast X, The Peripheral, Cinderella) will talk about the relationship between a Set Decorator and Buyer and what can help make it succeed.

  • Sarah McCaffrey Psychotherapist and film trainer will deliver management and mental well-being elements.

*Participants must commit to attend all sesisons - we do not record or share information. In extenuating circumstances dates may change due to tutor availability Course fees: FREE
